How To Teach Your Child the Importance of STEM

When I was a little girl I had the opportunity to explore science and technology and I loved it. In fact, I loved it so much I made it my career as an adult. For this reason, I know teaching kids the importance of STEM. That’s why I’m going to give you 3 simple ways to help your kids understand why STEM is important.

Give them an honest and positive mindset

If we want our kids to see STEM as a possible option we have to make sure there perception of this industry is honest and positive. We can do this by letting them see real life examples of people who actually work in STEM. If it’s possible let them talk to someone who works in stem and encourage them to explore the field by being curious and asking questions. It’s important for our kids to know STEM is not just for geniuses, men, and nerds. In reality, it is a field for anyone to enjoy.

Show them how STEM works in the world around them

Use your child’s interests and hobbies to help them understand how STEM is a part of it. For example;

●    If your child likes building with legos, explain to them that they could be a good structural engineer.

●    If you notice your child is interested in gardening let them know they would make a good botanist.

●    If you see a child enjoys creating contraptions tell them how they can do the same thing as an engineer.

It’s important that you show them how STEM is a part of their everyday world. Show them how STEM helped create their neighborhood, buildings, bridges and so on.

Help them find ways to practice coding

You don’t have to wait for your child to go to college to start using code. You can help them start coding right now. Even if your child doesn’t have programming classes at school. There are a lot of tools out there to help your child learn computer programming without having to be in the classroom.

Try dedicating a small amount of time every weekday or every other day to practice coding. This will build a consistent routine that will give your child confidence in their programming skills. Remember, it’s never too early or too late in your life to start coding.

Now that you know how to get your child interested in STEM what is one thing you going to do to share the exciting world of STEM with them today?
